Vision Screening Program

Eye Test

Free Vision Screening

The New Fairfield Lions Club is pleased to offer a free yearly screening to children in Grades K-5. We have been providing this service in Consolidated and Meeting House Hill Schools since 2012. School nurses love this vision screening because we can complete a whole school in about 5 hours while it would take the nurses many days to finish screening each child in the school. Each screening takes an average of 15 seconds per child and we never need to touch the child at all.

700 Children Screened Annualy

On average, we screen over 700 children each year and we find that 10-11% of those children would benefit from a visit to a pediatric ophthalmologist.  Screening children pre-school through 2nd grade presents a particular advantage: in most cases, if the child has a vision problem and receives vision correction before they learn to read, they are not left behind in their reading skills and, in some cases, will outgrow the need for glasses.

SPOT Vision Camera

Using a SPOT Vision Camera and standing 3 feet away from a child, our camera will take a picture of a child's eyes and perform a screening that tests for 13 different eye anomalies, especially astigmatism, strabismus, pupil size, and gaze asymmetry. Many of these readings go way over and above the simple vision tests that the school nurses can carry out. We can send the results wirelessly to a printer and each child can go home with a sheet explaining the results to their parents.

Supporting Partners

A partnership with local businesses allows us to provide either free or low-cost eye exams and glasses to needy children.
